George Lopez jokes about his cancellation: 'I'm fine, my goddesses are a wreck'

 
George Lopez seems to be taking the news of his TBS show's cancellation pretty well, judging by his monologue Wednesday (Aug. 10) night.

TBS decided Wednesday to cancel "Lopez Tonight," which ran for two seasons but was struggling in the ratings. The final show airs Thursday. Lopez devoted a couple minutes of his monologue (you can also watch here) to the news, joking that "We're not saying goodbye. We're saying -- cable doesn't work."

He also made reference to Charlie Sheen getting canned from "Two and a Half Men": "People ask me, what are you going to do? Like every TV star before me, I'm gonna find some crack. I'm gonna get on the pipe, lose that unwanted 110 pounds I've been trying to lose. ... I'm fine, but my goddesses are a wreck. ... They left me."

Lopez also says he's grateful Sony has decided to make a sequel to "The Smurfs," in which he does the voice of Grouchy. "So today I lost some work because I'm brown, but also I got some work because I'm blue," he says.

Lopez's fellow TBS host, Conan O'Brien, expressed his sympathy for Lopez and the show's crew on "Conan" Wednesday night. "Had it not been for George being so incredibly supportive of me I would not have come to TBS," he said. "... Tonight all of our thoughts are with George and his staff and crew."

The final "Lopez Tonight" airs at midnight ET Thursday.

George Lopez jokes while Conan mourns cancellation

George Lopez faced his audience last night for the first time since TBS announced that Thursday’s show will be his final episode. The audience booed after Lopez shared the sad news, but chuckles won out after Lopez revealed his plans for the future. “Like every TV star before me, I’ma find some crack. I’ma get on the pipe!,” he joked, at Charlie Sheen’s expense. “Lose that unwanted 110 pounds I been trying to lose. But I’m taking it good, I’m straight, believe me. I’m fine. My goddesses… are a wreck. They left me. I’m a losing teeth.” Watch the clip here or below.

 

Later in the night, Conan O’Brien, whose heralded arrival at TBS shifted Lopez to a later timeslot, honored his gracious neighbor and mourned the loss of the show. “Had it not been for George being so incredibly supportive of me I would not have come to TBS,” O’Brien said after the first commercial break. “It makes me really sad that TBS and George could not work this out … so tonight all of our thoughts are with George and his staff and his crew.”

Lopez is hitting the road, literally. He and Carlos Santana are going on tour together, beginning Sept. 3. In hindsight, though, was this parting of the ways inevitable once Lopez was pushed back to accommodate Conan?

George Lopez wasn't afraid to talk about his show getting canceled on "Lopez Tonight" yesterday -- but he told the crowd that he was being fired because of the color of his skin.

Lopez -- whose voice was featured in the "Smurfs" movie -- was talking about how Sony has greenlit a "Smurfs" sequel during his monologue ... and quipped, "So today I lost some work because I'm brown, but I got some work because I'm blue!"

Is Lopez REALLY blaming race ... or was he just trying to crack a bad joke?

George Lopez jokes about cancellation of 'Lopez Tonight,' references Charlie Sheen

George Lopez joked about the cancellation of "Lopez Tonight" on the TBS talk show and even paid tribute to troubled actor Charlie Sheen.

The cable network had announced on Wednesday that it had decided not to renew the late-night series, whose ratings have declined since its 2009 debut.

"Unemployment is at an all-time high and for Latinos, it just got a little higher," Lopez said during his monologue on "Lopez Tonight" on Wednesday. "We're not saying goodbye - we're saying cable doesn't work."

"Everybody asks ... 'What are you going to do now?'" Lopez added. "Like every TV star before me - I'm gonna find some crack. I'm going to get on the pipe. But I'm taking it good. My goddesses are a wreck. They left me and I'm losing teeth."

Sheen, who has battled alcohol and drug abuse for years, was fired from the hit CBS series "Two and a Half Man" in March after he insulted show co-creator Chuck Lorre in the media and following a rehab stint.

Before he was axed, Sheen, the top-paid TV actor at the time, was suspended from the show. He appeared on various news programs, touting his "winning," party-loving lifestyle and live-in girlfriends, or "goddesses." The actor maintained he was sober, dubbed himself a "rock star from Mars" and demanded a pay raise.

After TBS announced "Lopez Tonight" was canceled, Lopez received Twitter messages of support from fans as well as from several of his fellow comedians and actors, including Ashton Kutcher, who is replacing Sheen on "Two and a Half Men" when it returns for a ninth season in September.

"Hey @georgelopez sending love your way flaco," Kutcher Tweeted.

"Thank you El Kutch!" Lopez responded. "How about 3 1/2 men? I'm ready and close by!"

The news of the cancellation of "Lopez Tonight" even spurred a display of unity between comedienne and actress Roseanne Barr and her ex-husband, actor Tom Arnold.

"So sorry to hear of your cancellation--you are great!" Barr Tweeted, to which Arnold responded: "Finally something we agree on! Good luck George."

Others who expressed support for Lopez on Twitter include Margaret Cho, Judah Friedlander, "ER" and "Mulan" star Ming-Na, Holly Robinson Peete of "21 Jump Street" and the daytime series "The Talk," Niecy Nash, "Private Practice" actress Kate Walsh and "Rizzoli & Isles" star Angie Harmon, who was scheduled to appear on the show on Monday.

Lopez rose to fame as a comedian and later starred in his own scripted comedy series, "George Lopez," which aired originally between 2002 and 2007.

Lopez also appears in films and has voiced characters in animated movies such as "Beverly Hills Chihuahua," "Rio" and "The Smurfs." He recently filmed the comedy film "The Skank Robbers" with Halle Berry, Jamie Foxx and Martin Lawrence.

The final episode of "Lopez Tonight" airs on Thursday, August 11, at its regular timeslot of midnight and is set to feature Eva Longoria from "Desperate Housewives," which was also canceled recently and is set to air its eighth and final season in September.

Others set to appear on "Lopez Tonight" on Thursday are actor Benjamin Bratt, NBA player Ron Artest of the Los Angeles Lakers, former Guns n' Roses guitarist Slash and comedian Russell Peters.

George Lopez Speaks About Show Cancellation, Still Has Jokes

George Lopez’s TBS late night talk show Lopez Tonight was cancelled but the comedian is taking it in stride. During his opening monologue last night he turned the bad news into a comedic routine.

“So hey! Did you guys see the news?” he asked. “Unemployment is at an all-time high and for Latinos it just got a little higher.”

But George is trying to stay positive.

“I did get some good news this morning though. Sony announced they were doing a sequel to The Smurfs movie,” George said while wiping his brow. “So today I lost some work because I’m brown, but also I got some work because I’m blue.”

OK! Magazine caught up with the comedian to see what he was working on and a jokey Lopez still had people laughin.

“And really almost like every TV star who loses his job. Now what am I going to do, everybody asks. What am I going to do now? Like every TV star before I’m going to find some crack,” he joked. “I’m going to get on the pipe. Lose that unwanted 110 pounds I’ve been trying to lose.”

All jokes aside, he added that this really won’t be the last we see of him but the lesson he learned in this is that cable isn’t always the best place for a late night show. It works for small few but he just didn’t have that fortune.

George Lopez Revealed Dark Side with Prejudiced Jokes About Kirstie Alley

Kirstie Alley made her "Dancing with the Stars" debut on Monday, March 21. She rocked it, according to the judges, audience members, and viewers who called in and voted.

In spite of the popular opinion that Kirstie was the belle of the evening, unfortunately, the ugly reality of fat prejudice was not far behind. George Lopez to his late-night talk show on TBS and made crude jokes about Alley. He compared her to a pig.

He stated, "She did a nice job, her little hooves tapping away. Before the show, she went to the market, and then she had roast beef and this is her going all the way home..." The show then cut to a squealing pig, as Fox News reported,

Lopez's fat hate continued the next night. Instead of apologizing to Kirstie, he made fun of Kim Kardashian's weight...as well as Shaquille O'Neill's. Some people justify fat hate, seeing it as a choice, but that is an uneducated and narrow-minded view of the reality that people who are not a small size face.

Contrary to popular belief, scientists have proven time and again that body size or shape is usually not a choice, as indicated in several studies, including one from the NCBI. .It's complex. Even if it was a choice, would that justify a prejudice? I think not! All sizes can be hot, and it's time people of all sizes got respect, celebs or not.

George eventually decided to apologize. He didn't apologize on-air, as his jokes had been, though. He made a small, 60-character (of the 140 characters Twitter allows) apology to Kirstie via Twitter, stating that he misjudged the joke. He tweeted on his @georgelopez account, " I misjudged the joke. No malice was intended, and I apologize to Kirstie." This left many to wonder...If you're going to insult someone on the air, shouldn't you apologize to her there?

Kirstie likened the apology to a man saying he simply misjudged infidelity. As she jokes on Twitter (via her @kirstiealley account) to George in response to his half-hearted apology, " I don't need or want your apology...I want your kidney, dude. On behalf of your ex and all the women you've insulted, give it back."

However, Kirstie posted on Thursday that she did forgive George, offering fans the advice that you should take life as lightly as you can, and then move on. I look forward to a day when we can all move on from prejudices against one another!

Kirstie Alley Rejects George Lopez's Apology

Kirstie Alley doesn’t forgive George Lopez for the insensitive comments he made on his late-night show on TBS.

Lopez made several jokes about the 60-year-old Alley following her performance on the latest episode of Dancing with the Stars. Most jokes were comparing the mother of two to a pig, which is a sore subject for anyone when it comes to weight.

In an effort to apologize to Alley, Lopez posted on his Twitter page, “I misjudged the joke. No malice was intended and I apologize to Kirstie.”

However, Monsters and Critics reports that Alley was none too happy with his apology and has no intention of accepting it.

She fired back with a Twitter post as well, writing, “I don't consider 'I misjudged the joke' an apology. sort of like a husband saying, 'I misjudged putting my d*** in a whore'...sorry hon...hehe.”

The Hollywood Reporter added that Alley then got personal and made a comment about Lopez’s ex-wife, who donated a kidney to the talk show host.

"I don't need or want ur apology...I want your kidney dude..on behalf of ur X and all the women uv insulted...give it back," Alley wrote.
