YouTube springboard for young US comic

AS HIS friends trotted off to college, Bo Burnham, 20, hit the road. The US comic had spent his last high school years posting comedy songs on YouTube and the number of views had quickly multiplied to the tens of millions.

"I started writing little songs for my friends as jokes and I wrote jokes lyrically much easier [than stand-up] so I wrote a full song and posted it online and it took off," he recalls.

In 2008 he was invited to Montreal's Just For Laughs festival and hasn't looked back. For Burnham, the craft is all in the writing. And that's an evolving process. Meeting people like our own musical comedians Tim Minchin and Tripod has helped him mature and influenced him.

"[They] really opened my eyes up as to what musical comedy can be, rather than just a dude sitting up there singing songs," he says.
