Commentary: 11 Big East teams? Biggest tourney joke

By Marc Katz, Staff Writer 9:35 PM Thursday, March 17, 2011

It’s too late to change your brackets now, but if you’ve chosen a Big East team to go all the way, congratulations.

After all, you’re due.

Every year, selection committee pinheads and their counterparts on sports talk shows rave about one league or another. The past few years, it’s been all about the Big East.

Or, as my son Alex calls it, the Big Least.

Sure, I know, the second-place team in the Horizon League and the fourth-place team in the Atlantic 10 have absolutely no chance to win the NCAA tournament.

I’m telling you, from three on down, the teams in just about any other conference don’t stand a chance, either, and 11 tourney teams this year from the Big East is outright ridiculous.

My research guy — yeah, Alex — says the Big East sent 43 teams to the tournament from 2005-2010 and only five reached the Final Four. None, as in zero, reached the championship game.

It’s that way in all the conferences. In the Big East, only six teams finishing fourth or lower in the regular season even made it to the Sweet 16 during our sample period. Only one team that finished worse than third in the ACC or Big Ten made it to the Sweet 16.

The power conferences don’t want to play anybody remotely good on the road during their nonconference season, then can’t beat anybody remotely good in the tournament.

Next year, it might be time to re-evaluate.
